Massachusetts Becomes the Capital of Official Betting

As the Supreme Court allowed individual states to regulate sports betting, many states quickly got into the game—with varying regulatory approaches. Massachusetts, home to daily fantasy sports giant DraftKings, has a strong claim to being the capital of legal betting in the US. The state has teams in all four major US sports leagues, and local fans are passionate about their fandom. This makes the state a prime candidate for a successful regulated sportsbook industry.

The NFL has strict rules on betting and gambling that apply to players and those who work for a team or the league. For example, if an NFL player is caught placing a wager on a game while at the league’s facilities, they could get banned from the NFL for life. The league has also partnered with regulators, sportsbooks and integrity monitors to track betting activity.

In addition, the NBA has a policy that prohibits players and those who work for a team from betting on the NBA, the NBA summer league, the G-League, Basketball Africa League and NBA 2K league games. The NBA has also partnered with independent integrity monitors to track betting activity.

As of early 2023, there are eight online sportsbooks live in the state of Massachusetts, including DraftKings, FanDuel, WynnBET, Barstool and Betr.
