The Number of Official Betting Markets Continues to Grow

The number of official betting markets continues to grow, thanks to a Supreme Court decision that overturned PASPA and allowed states to write their own laws on sports gambling. The list of legal sportsbooks in the United States now includes more than 24 jurisdictions, with more on the horizon.

In Kentucky, sports betting launched Sept. 7 2023, with retail and online options at the same time. The state’s nine horse racing tracks and Kentucky Speedway will each host three KY online sportsbooks, with the initial operator roster including DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and Caesars.

Indiana passed sports betting legislation in 2019, with retail options opening in September that year and a fully launched online and mobile sportsbook by October. Initially, in-person registration was required to place bets, but that requirement expired in March 2022. DraftKings, FanDuel, PointsBet, BetRivers and others are all now available in the state.

Ohio also moved quickly after the Supreme Court’s ruling, approving sports betting in November 2020 and launching it in May 2019. It is now possible to place a bet in Ohio from any location with an internet connection, including mobile devices. Retail and online sportsbooks are available at PlaySugarHouse, SugarHouse Sportsbook, DraftKings and FanDuel.

MLB has a long history of working with sportsbooks, independent integrity monitors and fans to help ensure that the game is played fairly and honestly. In addition to collaborating with these partners, the league conducts in-house investigations of any alleged rules violations.
