The Official Poker Rules

Whether you are playing poker for free or for money, you must know the rules of the game. This is especially true if you are participating in a poker tournament. You can learn the rules in poker guides, like What Beats What in Poker.

You must keep your cards in view and not cover them up. If you cover up your cards, you may be disqualified from the tournament. You also need to make sure that the cards do not fall past the edge of the table.

There are five cards per player. The two cards dealt to each player are called “hole cards” and the community cards are used in combination with the hole cards to form a poker hand.

The player who has the best hand wins the pot. If two or more players have the same hand, a tie is split among them.

Poker games include fixed-limit and no-limit varieties. The limit of the bets depends on the stakes of the game. If a player has more chips than the others, he can increase the bet or fold. However, if the bet has already been placed, he cannot raise or fold.

The game is normally broken in a predetermined order. The first player in line is the first to be dealt. This player is called the “button”.

The first round of betting involves the player to the left of the big blind. The player can fold, raise, or call. If the player is dealt a bad hand, he can be put up for a forced bet.
